About Zip Codes
Zip codes were introduced by the US Postal Service (USPS) in 1963 as a postal code system. 'ZIP' is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, and your standard zip code is a five digit number. The ZIP+4 system was introduced in the 1980s, and adds an additional layer of precision to the zip code location. There are four main types of zip codes:
- Unique zip codes - Assigned to an address that gets a large volume of mail such as universities or large businesses
- P.O. Box zip codes - Assigned to a post office box
- Military zip codes
- Standard - Everything else!
